Designing Dallas: Outdoor Living Fabric Tips

One of the more disappointing aspects of many Dallas outdoor living designs is how bare the furnishings are. Metal seating isn’t all that comfortable - no matter how expensive it is. PVC lawn furniture is even less appealing. Anyone who has ever gotten their posterior “stuck” between the slightly elastic slats of a plastic lounge chair knows how embarrassing that can be!

The solution is to add comfortable upholstery, removable cushions, or throw pillows to all your outdoor seats. Textiles spread overhead provide shade from the sun in the form of awnings and umbrellas.  They can also be used as panels to enclose a gazebo or deck for greater privacy and for protection from the wind/cold. Hammocks that feature fabric rather than simple rope netting are also comfy and enjoyable.

Open-air textiles have to be very resistant to mildew and rot since North Texas is well known for its humidity and sudden rainstorms. They also need to stand up to extreme heat and UV radiation from sunlight. Here are some of the materials available for decorating and enhancing your Dallas outdoor living space:

Polyester

Spun polyester fabrics are flexible - like a soft piece of canvas. They may have a slightly slick texture depending on the weave and finish used. Choose poly textiles that have been treated for stain and mildew resistance. You can clean this material with soap and water or simply spray it down with a hose. Polyester is suitable for lounge covers and chair cushions. It can also be used for umbrellas. Some varieties of polyester are coated with PVC for additional protection against the elements.

Olefin

This is a fairly cost effective outdoor fabric. It is UV resistant;- this means you can choose bright colors and not worry about fading. Open weave olefin textiles are breathable and resist mildew. Clean it just like you would polyester. Diluted bleach or laundry stain removers can also be used to treat any discolorations. Olefin is a good choice for outdoor carpeting. Avoid using this material for lounge chairs if you plan to sunbathe - olefin doesn’t interact well with tanning lotion (neither does PVC).

Acrylic

Acrylic fibers are known for their durability and resistant to rot, mildew, staining, and chemical degradation. This type of textile can be spun and woven in different weights and textures. It is used for outdoor upholstery, hammocks, awnings - even outdoor curtains and drapes. Sunbrella is a popular manufacturer of high-quality acrylic fabrics. The company has over 2 dozen authorized dealers in and around Dallas. Outdoor living furnishings can be spruced up in array of stunning color combinations and patterns if you choose acrylic.

Vinyl

Vinyl is a reliable option for awnings and umbrellas. It is often constructed in a mesh or open weave style. Such materials let in some light while reducing overall UV exposure. Mesh also acts as a windbreak when used in screening applications. Laminated vinyl awnings can be installed to block rain.

No matter what outdoor fabrics you choose, make sure all the other materials (thread, grommets, etc) are also designed for open-air use. For assistance in “dressing” your Dallas outdoor living space in the finest textiles, contact us for a no-charge consultation.
