Decorative Concrete Resurfacing & Overlays

Do you have a poured concrete patio, walkway, or driveway on your property? As this type of material ages, it becomes less and less attractive. Instead of taking a jackhammer to the slab and pouring a new one, it is often possible to resurface the old concrete or add an overlay. This not only fixes the aesthetic problem but lets you add a wide variety of decorative effects.

Use What You’ve Got
Is your concrete still in relatively good condition? You may be able to rework the existing surface to mimic a more expensive material. For example a professional resurfacing company can color and score the concrete to resemble stone masonry flooring or even granite. If you prefer marble, then have a qualified expert stain it to create this faux look.

Once the surface is polished and sealed, it will look surprisingly realistic – especially from a distance. An experienced contractor can create a final effect that is both decorative and durable. When done correctly, the concrete may actually last longer than the surface it is simulating. Be sure to ask how frequently you should reseal the concrete for best results in an outdoor setting.

Try Fancy Overlays For A Whole New Look And Feel
Spray on and spread-on concrete or resin matrix overlays are another option if your existing concrete surface isn’t a good fit for staining and polishing. Many of these materials can be tinted prior to application so the color definitely won’t wear off over time. Some can be dyed after installation to create vivid designs. Stenciling can be used to create decorative borders.

The overlay can also be imprinted while still wet to create indentations that look like tile. If you have a specific theme or piece of artwork that you want to stamp into the concrete, it’s likely that an artisan can achieve this for you as well. Imagine having a monogrammed, one-of-a-kind patio or a walkway covered with geckos! The possibilities are endless.

If you want a non-skid surface, an overlay can give you that too. This makes it a great option for the space around your swimming pool and for any walkways that are exposed to the rain. Mixing in aggregate materials can add any number of interesting textures and light catching effects as well.

When Repair Is Required Prior To Overlay
Proceed with caution when the cement is excessively cracked or if the surface has buckled. Even with a layer of sand between the overlay and the foundation slab, the overlay may have a tendency to crack and buckle in the same way. It might be possible to do a patch repair prior to the overlay application. However, it may be best to rework the entire slab and fix the underlying foundation problem instead.

Another thing you do not want to do is mix simulated concrete surface with real ones. They wear differently - especially when exposed to UV radiation and moisture. Even if you can get an exact match in initial appearance, a few years later they will no longer look the same.
