Dallas Outdoor Kitchens - Keeping it Cool

With over 8 months of warm weather in an average year, there is no shortage of opportunities to cook and eat your meals outdoors in Dallas. Outdoor kitchens are becoming an increasingly popular option for those who love open air dining. Just having a stove top isn’t enough. When you entertain outside, installing a refrigerator is just as important.

It’s wonderfully convenient to have a well stocked refrigerator incorporated into your patio kitchen. With a fridge on hand, you can keep drinks cool and meat/vegetables fresh until it is time for them to hit the grill. Even better, you can store potato salad and other side dishes that contain mayonnaise. You don’t want to get a reputation for giving your guests food poisoning!

Fridge Location

Outdoor refrigerators are specifically designed to handle a rough environment. These units will keep your food and beverages within the correct temperature range for storage even on hot days. However, it is important to locate your refrigerator out of reach of the weather as much as possible. For example, you should have some type of shade awning to protect the fridge from direct sun and rain.

A covered patio with a corner that is protected from the wind provides an ideal location for all your Dallas outdoor kitchen appliances. To save energy, always locate your refrigerator far from your outdoor oven, grill, fireplace, or other heat sources. Plan to install it near a water line if you are purchasing a model with an icemaker or water dispenser.

Basics and Options

These appliances are somewhat more expensive than their indoor cousins. They also don’t normally have quite as many gadgets included. Rugged means simple. Durable stainless steel is the material of choice for both the interior and exterior of these units. This metal is rust resistant and offers an attractive, easy to clean finish. Deep pullout drawers and glass fronts are offered as alternatives to a single steel door.

Many outdoor models are supplied in under-counter configurations to save space and provide protection. Some are fully portable and can be plugged into an outdoor or indoor electrical outlet. Other models are standalone units that can be used as either a fridge or a keg holder with a beer tap dispenser on top. Sizes generally range from 3.5-5.5 cubic feet. Anything smaller is usually categorized as a fancy ice chest.

Energy Expenses

Outdoor refrigerators must be manufactured to be better insulated and more energy efficient than indoor models. These appliances are most likely to be used during the hot summer months. The heat exchanger or heat pump has to work hard because of the greater difference between the interior and exterior air. Instead of bringing the temperature from the low 70s to 35-380, an outside fridge may have to battle heat in the 90 degree range.

This means the energy star rating of the device should be an important factor in your purchasing decision. To save on your electric bill, shut the unit down when you aren’t using it. Just remember to turn it back on at least 24 hours before you host your next open air dinner party.
